Society and the popular media expect moms to “bounce back” (physically, mentally, and emotionally) after having a baby which adds undue distress to their healing and recovery journey. This pressure may contribute to the maternal mental health and black maternal health crisis as research shows that maternal mortality is highest in the post-partum phase. Attempting to “bounce back” to a normal weight, especially in a short amount of time deepens the wound as some women find they cannot live up to societal expectations. However, it is important for women to return to a relative state of health (i. e healthy weight, blood sugar, blood pressure, etc) in order to reduce the risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other ailments. Registered dietitians have tools to help women during their postpartum journey “recover rationally” instead of struggling to “bounce back.”
