Weight-based discrimination and victimization stems from weight bias, which is the inclination to form negative and unreasonable judgments about an individual’s character, skills, and abilities based on his or her weight. This session will explore increasing awareness of this issue, as well as the established negative impacts of weight-based victimization/discrimination, to provide better medical care and support to patients and families.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the session, attendees will be able to:

  1. Define weight bias and stigma
  2. Establish prevalence in the healthcare setting
  3. Identify problems resulting from weight bias and stigma
  4. Review strategies to minimize bias
