Overview:
As dietitians, many of us work in the field of substance abuse, whether we are aware of it or not. The aim of this webinar is to impart the tools needed to help achieve optimum success with active users of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs, as well as those in recovery. By understanding the mechanisms of cravings and weight gain in recovery, medications used in to aid in recovery, and counseling strategies tailored to substance-dependent people, we can best help them to avoid undesirable weight gain and attain their health goals.

Objectives:
Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the psychobiology of cravings and explain how this affects weight control during recovery. (LNC: 5350, 5370)
  2. Define the concept of "substance substitution." (LNC 5350)
  3. List 2 or more medications used to aid recovery and their possible effects on weight. (LNC 3070)
  4. Name 3 barriers to dietary counseling with substance abusers.(LNC 6020)
  5. Apply 3 strategies for improving dietary outcomes when working with people in recovery. (LNC 6010, 6020)
