This dynamic, interactive workshop outlines methods that combine various communication and behavioral techniques to facilitate behavior change of patients. The goal is to identify new ways for practitioners to help their patients to evolve from external to internal motivation to sustain changes. Using interactive practice exercises and breakout sessions, participants will experience how to evolve from a didactic nutrition expert to a facilitative and client-centered counselor or coach.
At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Understand and cite the differences between traditional counseling, coaching, and motivational interviewing.
- Understand and distinguish between internal and external methods of overcoming obstacles to change. This will include positive thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors based on internal locus of control.
- Discuss and demonstrate change methods and language to facilitate and maintain new behaviors.
